Kelowna man dies in rafting accident weeks before his wedding

WATCH: Family and friends are remembering a man who died in a rafting accident just weeks before his wedding day. Julia Foy reports.

KELOWNA — A river-rafting accident has claimed the life of a Kelowna businessman, just weeks before he was due to be married.

Rene Bourgault died last Sunday while rafting with three friends on the Kicking Horse River.

According to reports, Bourgault and his friends were thrown into the river near Golden.

Three of the rafters made it to shore but Bourgault was swept down river where his body was recovered.

Bourgault owned a synthetic lawn business in Kelowna called SynLawn. Global Okanagan interviewed him recently regarding new watering regulations in Kelowna.

A Gofundme account has been set up in Bourgault’s name.

“Rene was a charismatic, successfull entrepreneur and a vibrant member of Kelowna’s business community,” the page reads. “He was looking foward [sic] to marrying the love of his life, Chelsea, in just a few short weeks. Nothing could have prepared any of us for this.”
