Summary: NDP incumbent Megan Leslie is looking to win a third term in this riding. Her Conservative opponent is well-known, but the Conservative Party has not fared well in this riding in the past several elections.

Boundaries: This riding includes downtown and peninsular Halifax, including the university area, as well as suburban communities to the south such as Herring Cove, Williamswood, and Sambro.

Last Election: NDP incumbent Megan Leslie defeated the Liberal candidate, Stan Kutcher, by nearly 12,000 votes.

History: The NDP has held this seat since 1997, when former NS NDP leader Alexa McDonough claimed the seat. The race in the past several elections has been between the NDP and the Liberals, with the Conservative/PC party finishing third since 2000.

Demographics: 12.7 per cent of residents in Halifax were immigrants as of the 2011 National Householder Survey, the second highest percentage in Atlantic Canada.
