EDMONTON – Two teenagers died Sunday night after a crash near Spruce Grove.
Police have determined a pick up truck was travelling west on Highway 16A at about 10 p.m. at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes.
The two teens were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled several times before coming to a stop on its roof in a farmer’s field next to the highway about five kilometres east of Spruce Grove.
One of the teens was pronounced dead at the scene. The other teen was taken to an Edmonton hospital where he died.
“It appears that neither were wearing their seat belt,” said Const. Kathleen Fossen with Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP. “We need to be wearing those seat belts. We need to be diligent about that. They do save lives.”
The two male victims were 18 and 19 years old, from the Spruce Grove/Stony Plain area.
RCMP said it’s very lucky nobody else was hurt.
“It’s a very busy highway and to cross over several lanes of traffic and to not have any other vehicles involved really was quite surprising and very quite lucky,” said Fossen.
Police said names of the victims won’t be released.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
