Man creates jaw-dropping ‘Sky Ladder’ firework for Grandma’s 100th birthday

TORONTO – It might have taken a couple decades to perfect, but a Chinese artist’s jaw-dropping firework concept was absolutely worth the wait.

Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang has been working on ‘Sky Ladder’ since 1994, according to TIME. Envisioning a ‘stairway to heaven’, he finally managed to pull it off this year in Quanzhou City – just in time to commemorate his grandmother’s 100th birthday.

Trending in China posted video of the June display Monday on Facebook and it almost instantly went viral. As of this writing, it has been watched over 30 million times.

Reaction to the video has been very positive and, sometimes, downright hilarious. Facebook user Chris Coates‘ reaction is a prime example.

“It’s all fun and games until a demon from another dimension climbs down that ladder and kills everyone in China.”

But if you’re hoping Guoqiang created some miraculous new technology – think again. A large weather balloon was sent up in the sky to hold a 500 metre wire ladder covered in fireworks and gun powder.

Either way, you still might need to pick your jaw up off the floor.
