Summary: A largely rural riding to Montreal’s northeast, Joliette will be electing its third MP in as many elections in 2015, as NDP MP Francine Raynault is retiring. The Conservative candidate, Soheil Eid, has had to apologize for comparing the words of Tom Mulcair to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels in a Facebook post.
Boundaries: The riding contains the city of Joliette and thousands of of square kilometres of rural land, mostly in Matawinie, separated by many small towns.
Last Election: NDP candidate Francine Raynault defeated four-term BQ MP Pierre Paquette by 14.4 per cent.

History: Prior to the NDP’s victory, the Bloc Quebecois had held this riding since 1993. Prior to that, it had been held by the Progressive Conservatives from 1993 to 1997 – mostly under Roch La Salle, who was MP for 20 years beginning in 1988.
Demographics: 95.7 per cent of people in Joliette said they were religious in the 2011 National Household Survey, the ninth highest figure in the country. The ridings median age is 47.2, tenth highest in Quebec.
