North Shore Rescue crews had a close call rescuing two stranded hikers off Crown Mountain in North Vancouver Sunday night, just minutes before darkness.

The crews got a call around 8 p.m. for a hiker in distress, who was suffering from debilitating leg spasms, near the summit of the mountain.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

After unsuccessfully trying to get out on their own and with night fast approaching, the two hikers became stranded on a steep slope below crown and called 911.

Rescue crews initiated a two-pronged ground and air response.

A Talon helicopter was dispatched and the hikers were extracted with a longline rescue.

Rescue crews say the hikers were lightly equipped and did not have sufficient light with them, having to guide the rescuers in with their cellphones.
