CALGARY – It will be a weekend to remember for local musicians Jamil Ahmed and Kate Melvina.

They’re going from busking downtown Calgary to playing the mainstage at “Afrikadey!” during the festival’s showcase event on Saturday at Prince’s Island.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Ahmed is studying business at Mount Royal University, while Melvina pays the bills by teaching piano.

“We’re really proud. It’s a big step up,” said Ahmed.

They’ll be sharing the spotlight at “Afrikadey!” with Bill Clinton…not the former U.S. president, but an African star named Bill Clinton Kalonji, who is making his Calgary debut.

He got his name when he showed up for a talent show wearing a T-shirt featuring his presidential namesake. The host called him “Bill Clinton,” and years later, he still goes by the name.

“That’s kind of funny. I think it’s a clever name,” said Ahmed.
