WINNIPEG — There’s room for improvement for the Manitoba Home Care program when it comes to wait times, according to a report out today by the province’s Auditor General.

The report looks into the management and delivery of home care services by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Southern Health – Sante Sud. The goal of the program is to keep patients at home, rather than staying in hospital.

The audit found WRHA clients wait on average 37 days for personal care and household services to start after requesting assistance. However, nursing services began “promptly” following referral to the program. Waits were a bit shorter for clients in the Southern Health region at 31 days.

The audit also found that some client assessments were incomplete. “We are concerned that incomplete assessments may lead to care plans that ignore or overlook required services,” said Auditor General Norm Ricard.
