Crews battling blaze at auto recycling depot in Kelowna

UPDATE at 3:30 p.m.:

Kelowna RCMP say the fire was sparked when an employee was removing a gas tank from the vehicle.

The three people working at the time escaped the burning building. One person was treated on scene for minor injuries.

KELOWNA — Thick, black smoke can be seen billowing from an auto recycling business Wednesday morning.

Firefighters are battling the blaze at Apple Valley Auto Recycling & Service on Saucier Road, which is destroying the single-storey building and several vehicles.

Neighbours say they heard a series of loud explosions just before the fire ripped through the property.

They say they spoke to the man who started the blaze, who says he was working on a vehicle when the car caught fire.

Crews are concerned about the fuel stored on the site.

FortisBC has cut power to the business to help protect the firefighters’ safety.
