WINNIPEG — Sunny skies are in the forecast for southwestern Manitoba this long weekend but a storm is set to sweep through, at least in film form.

The Shamrock Drive-In plans to show the 1996 movie Twister during the long weekend. It is a fitting choice given how the Killarney drive-in was hit by severe weather a few weeks ago.

“It was a very scary night,” Joanne Struss, the owner of Shamrock, said.

During a storm on July 11 Struss believes lightning hit one of the posts of the screen and wind brought it down.

“You could tell it was hit by lightning because it was all charred on the bottom,” Struss said.

The damage isn’t stopping the drive-in from showing Twister. Struss plans to charge half price admissions because there is only half a screen.

Admission on Friday and Saturday night will be $4 for an adult, $3 for a senior and $2 per child. On Sunday the Shamrock is putting on a double feature of Twister and Wizard of Oz. It will cost an additional $1 per person.

The drive-in didn’t need the damage. It was already trying to raise money for digital equipment upgrades through an online crowd funding website.

“We are hoping to raise $25,000,” Struss said, who added so far $6,000 has been brought in through various fundraisers.

Struss said she hopes to have the money raised in time for summer next year.

The Shamrock Drive-In is around three hours southwest of Winnipeg.
