Searchers are concerned because the couple’s car was found Monday evening at the trail head, hours after the pair was expected to have returned from their outing.

The avalanche risk is climbing in the region, and safety issues kept search teams off the trails overnight, although a helicopter and avalanche technicians are assessing conditions today.

Staff Sgt. Dan Siebel says there have been no avalanches reported in the Kootenay Pass area since the couple set out.
