Canadian disqualified from men’s 50-km Pan Am race walk

The only Canadian to start the 50-kilometre race walk — the final athletics event of the 2015 Pan American games — has been disqualified.

Creighton Connolly was ordered off the course 15 km into the race for three bent-knee infractions.

Under race walking rules, one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times. The leading leg must also be straight – no bending at the knee.

“It’s been a good race despite the outcome,” Connolly said.

“Even in the Olympics, athletes are disqualified; it’s a part of the sport but I think there are certain people who are disqualified quite often.”

The race was won by Andres Chocho of Ecuador.

Two other entrants, Edward Araya of Chile and Armando Jorge Ruiz of Colombia, were disqualified for three bent knee infractions 10 km into the race.

Three entrants were unable to complete the race in the warm and humid conditions. Of the field of 14, eight races completed the course.
