EDMONTON — A memorial began to grow near a Morinville pond Sunday after a two-year-old girl was found unresponsive in the water Saturday morning.
RCMP officers responded to a report of a missing two-year-old girl at a park in Morinville’s Lakes Subdivision around 11:40 a.m. When they arrived, RCMP found the girl unresponsive in a nearby pond.
Police said the girl was playing with her siblings and there were no adults present at the time.
CPR was performed, but the girl was pronounced dead by EMS.
On Monday, the Town of Morinville said it will begin wrapping black and pink ribbons around area trees and posts, as part of the “Morinville Angel Ribbon Campaign.”
“Our community has suffered a loss,” said Felicity Bergman, with the Town of Morinville. “The current focus is on the family, the first responders and others affected by this loss.”
Some area residents believe a fence around the pond could have prevented the girl’s death.
“You know, you teach your kids and stuff like that, but they’re young and they see water and they get excited. It’s hard,” said Brandy Roberts, who brought her two young children to the park Monday. One of her sons asked if they could come.
“He wanted to bring his little monkey, so I just asked him to give it a kiss and a hug and tell that little girl to take care in heaven,” said Roberts.
Morinville RCMP and the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office are involved in the investigation.
Morinville is located about 30 kilometres north of Edmonton.
