The Calgary Zoo penguins will be part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Penguin Species Survival Plan (SSP) for each species, and it is hoped that someday the pitter-patter of little penguin feet will Join the adult birds.
The 46 penguins came from five different zoological institutions including the Biodome in Montreal; Rosamond Gifford zoo in Syracuse, New York; Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington; a collective group from Seaworld San Antonio, Texas and as far away as Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland.
The objective of the new exhibit is that visitors not only fall in love with the Penguins and enjoy their Antarctic experience, but leave the zoo motivated to help preserve wild penguin habitat and ensure the survival of the bird.
