SASKATOON – A chase involving the public came to an end when a Saskatoon police dog put the bite on a break and enter suspect. It happened Wednesday evening in the Broadway district.

Police were alerted to the break-in just after 9 p.m. after the owners of a home in the 600-block of 7th Avenue East arrived home to find a man inside. He ran from the home and was pursued by one of the homeowners.

The chase went through the neighbourhood and into the Broadway district. People, not knowing what was going on, called police to report the chase.

One person who spotted the chase joined in to help capture the suspect.

The suspect then grabbed a hedge shear from a backyard and threatened his pursuers in an effort to avoid capture.

He then attempted to hide in a backyard and when discovered by police, attempted to run away. He refused to stop for officers and a police dog was used to take down the suspect in the 500-block of 10th Street East.

The 59-year-old suspect was taken to hospital to be treated for bite injures.

He is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon provincial court on Thursday morning to face charges of break and enter, and assault with a weapon.
