WATCH: Staff inspect windows at Thorncliffe apartment building where 4-year-old fell to his death
TORONTO – Funeral services will be held today for a 4-year-old boy who fell 15 storeys from a high rise apartment building in Toronto’s east-end on Saturday.
Residents in the building have been collecting donations for the child’s family and a community vigil is also planned for Tuesday night.
Police say the boy was reportedly playing in a bedroom with other children when he fell from a window.
The building’s tenants association says safety locks, which are mandatory according to city bylaws, were installed on all of the high rise’s windows two years ago.
Safety audits were being completed on Monday to ensure the locks remained in place and installed properly.
The Ontario Safety League says there are as many as five window or balcony falls in the Greater Toronto Area every year.
The funeral will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Salaheddin Islamic Center on 741 Kennedy Rd. while the vigil is scheduled at 6 p.m. at the Thorncliffe apartment building.
