TOROTNO – Canada’s Maxime Potvin took home the silver medal in the men’s 68-kilogram taekwondo event at the Pan Games Monday after falling to Mexico’s Saul Gutierrez in the final.

The 27-year-old from Quebec City lost 6-3 to Gutierrez in a close final.

“I tried to follow the movement. It feels great to fight in my own country, and it gave me a lot of energy during my fight,” Potvin said following his match. “I didn’t feel any extra pressure to win though.”

Potvin won all three of his previous matches before the gold medal. He defeated Brazil’s Henrique Precioso before winning in the semifinal against American Terrence Jennings.

On the women’s side, Evelyn Gonda of New Westminster, B.C., lost a 10-3 decision to Cuban Yamicel Nunez for bronze in the women’s 57-kilogram event earlier Monday.
