Long-anticipated Peace Bridge opening on March 24

The City of Calgary has announced the controversial Peace Bridge across the Bow River will finally open on March 24th, 2012.

The $24.5 million project been plagued with delays spurred by late shipments of steel, struggles with the project’s assembly and quality concerns.

The bridge was originally approved in 2008 by then mayor Dave Bronconnier, but its construction has been a magnet for controversy due to the bridge’s cost and proximity to other pedestrian crossings, as well as its design.

The City says a number of items still need to be completed before the opening, including work on the approach areas at both ends of the bridge and removal of the final segments of the temporary bridge structure.

The 850-metric tonne steel structure was moved across the Bow River over several days in late November 2011 and lowered onto the permanent abutments in December.
