Sask. provincial parks limits stays to increase camping attendance

Saskatchewan provincial parks are making changes to their camping program including an expansion of the 14-night maximum stay during the peak season and making all regular campsites available for either walk-up or reservation registrations.

The number of campsites designated as 14-night-maximum stay will increase in 25 provincial park campgrounds and recreation sites for the peak period of June 24 to September long weekend.

“These changes, combined with our new reservation system, will allow many more families to share a park experience,” said Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson.

The ministry has piloted this program in a number of parks over the last three years and has found that limiting camping stays to a maximum of 14 nights allows more visitors to experience camping in a provincial park. Approximately 40 per cent of all nightly campsites will be designated as maximum stay.

Changes to the cost of online booking include a $7 to $10 increase to change a reservation, $10 to cancel a reservation later than 48 hours after the original booking and $2 to use a call centre to make, change or cancel a reservation.

Over the past four years, the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport has made improvements like a new online booking system, and added electricity to nearly 1,100 campsites. During this period, the number of visits to Saskatchewan parks has grown by more than 11 per cent.
