UPDATE – Arrest made after bizarre incident in downtown Kelowna; charges laid

UPDATE – Cody Weninger has been charged with arson, assault and resisting arrest.

He is being held in custody pending a July 17th court date.

 

UPDATE: A 22-year-old Kelowna man will remain in custody until a court appearance on Tuesday after a fire was deliberately set in a downtown Kelowna law office building.  The building houses Pihl Law and the Porter Ramsay Law Corporation.  RCMP say the suspect lit a pile of clothes on fire-  which started spreading to the carpet and walls.

Two firefighters attempting to put out the blaze were assaulted by the suspect.  A lawyer who intervened to help was also attacked.  One firefighter sustained minor injury to his hand while the lawyer received a shoulder injury. The building was evacuated and Ellis Street was closed for about an hour and a half.

KELOWNA – One man has been arrested and taken into custody after a suspect attempted to start a fire at downtown Kelowna law office.

Police say late Monday morning, a man walked into the Pihl Law office on Ellis street and proceeded to start a fire, possibly using cigarettes.

Everyone in the building managed to escape unharmed.

There are reports that one of the lawyers got into a scuffle with the suspect.

One firefighter may have also suffered a cut to his hand.
