Fire rips through Morinville condo building

EDMONTON — A condominium building in Morinville was extensively damaged by fire Saturday.

Fire crews were called to the six-unit condo building across the street from the Morinville Public Elementay School around 5 p.m.

Morinville Fire Chief Brad Boddez said two of the units were completely destroyed in the blaze. Two other units were extensively damaged and the other two were not damaged in the fire.

Everyone inside the building was able to make it out safely. A sister condo building was also evacuated as a precaution; it sustained heat damage. Several nearby homes also sustained heat damage.

Boddez said the blaze was contained by 10 p.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The damages are pegged at $1.2 million.

Morinville’s fire chief said Monday 14 people were displaced by the fire and there’s no word on when they might be able to return home.
