Alberta’s distracted drivers not getting the message: police

It’s been over five months since Alberta’s distracted driving law came into effect, but Lethbridge Regional Police say motorists still aren’t getting the message.

Police around Alberta have been cracking down on infractions, but after an early wake up call, it seems old habits have returned.

“Pulling out of the station on August 31, by the time I could get in to traffic, I would have seen four vehicles with drivers on the phone,” says Cst. Wade Davidson of the Traffic Response Unit. “On September 1, I couldn’t see any. Now it’s back to four again.”

Back in September, LRPS handed out 54 distracted driving tickets. As of early February, that number had climbed to nearly 200.

Cst. Davidson says he’s witnessed the ultimate in distraction.

“I observed a person in heavy morning traffic on Scenic Drive eating a bowl of soup while driving with her kness,” he says. “That was rather bothersome.”

As the tickets continue to add up, police are reminding drivers that more than just a fine is on the line.

“We do go to collisions where phones are involved. It happened before the legislation and it’s happened since,” says Cst. Davidson.

“Those are preventable.”
