37th annual Lethbridge Street Machine is revving up for the weekend
Hundreds of car enthusiasts will be taking over the city over the next three days as part of an annual Lethbridge tradition.
The Street Machine Weekend starts Friday night and is the brainchild of the Street Wheelers Car Club. The event has become a household name across southern Alberta since its inception in 1977.
This year marks the 37th year for the event which will be held July 10 – 12. The popular cruise along 3rd Avenue will begin tonight at 7:00 p.m with everything from Hot Rods, motorcycles and antique cars. Parade organizers expect to have 800 vehicles registered in the event.
Saturday’s activities will include a 100 foot dash at 11:00 a.m in front of the grandstand at Exhibition Park. Also featured will be the Code Three Cup involving police officers from southern Alberta.
“It promotes ‘anti-street racing'” said P.J. Nadeau, Street Wheelers president. “And shows police, as well as the public, that we are not a bunch of hooligans.”
Officers will drive marked cruisers and compete against each other in their own race, in an event designed to build a positive relationship between the car community and local police.
