Gord Steinke receives military honour

EDMONTON – Global Edmonton’s own Gord Steinke has been awarded a huge honour, he’s been appointed Honourary Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th Edmonton Field Ambulance. The unit is part of the 41st Canadian Brigade Group.

The Ministry of Defense made the appointment official this week.

Steinke received his officer’s bars at the Jefferson Armoury on Wednesday night.

Many of the soldiers in the unit have performed tours of duty in Afghanistan.

The appointment of Honouray Colonels goes back to the Boer War.

“What makes me and my family especially proud of this honorary title is that my Grandfather (who I was very close to) was Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Herbert Ford,” Steinke says, “He was a World War 1 Veteran who fought at Vimy Ridge and Passchendale with Tobin’s Tigers – 29th Vancouver Battalion. I can see him smiling.”
