Dangerous summer continues for Alberta kids and ATVs

CALGARY – In the last few weeks, health officials say another 10 Alberta children have been seriously hurt in incidents related to ATVs; three received injuries so severe they needed to be hospitalized.

So far this summer, 44 children have been treated for ATV-related injuries at pediatric emergency departments and 20 needed to be admitted to hospital. Since May 1, three children have died.

Alberta Health Services says children under the age of 16 should not drive or ride ATVs. In June, Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason told Global News he’s planning a review into ATV safety for children, acknowledging Alberta’s laws are lagging behind other jurisdictions.

Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act states it’s illegal for anyone under 14 years of age to operate an off-highway vehicle on public land without adult supervision.
