Evacuation order lifted for residents of Tallcree First Nation

EDMONTON – After spending five nights out of their homes due to a nearby forest fire, residents of North Tallcree First Nation are being allowed to return home.

About 200 people were forced to leave their homes on Thursday because of a wildfire burning about four kilometres away from the remote northern Alberta community.

Fort Vermillion RCMP said Tuesday the evacuation order had been lifted.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were 93 wildfires burning in Alberta, 37 of which were listed as out of control. In the last 24 hours there have been four new wildfires in Alberta.

Since April 1, 2015, Alberta has recorded 1,289 wildfires that have burned a total of 378,498 hectares.

Across Canada, there are more than 418 wildfires burning. So far this year, there have been more than 4,500 that have charred more than 2,150,000 hectares of forest.

There are twice the number of fires that there were at this time last year when just over 2,200 fires burned 515,732 hectares of forest.
