The Brandon police department is apologizing to residents of the Manitoba city Tuesday, days after issuing a press release which referenced “three intoxicated natives.”

The police apologized in a statement released Tuesday afternoon, saying the original release was “not intended to offend anyone.”

“The Brandon Police Service is sincerely sorry for what was released and we offer our apologies to anyone who felt offended,” the statement read.

The statement goes on to say that the police department is reviewing its internal media protocol to ensure “this unfortunate event does not happen in the future.”

Grand Chief Terry Nelson, of the Southern Chiefs Organization, told the Winnipeg Free Press that the release should have been worded differently.

“In this (one) release it would seem the Brandon police are seeming more to uphold a stereotype than anything else,” Nelson said.

The original release said police had been told about “3 intoxicated natives” outside a local business asking people to buy them beer.

Police responded and detained three men, a 37-year-old from Sioux Valley, a 52-year-old from Brandon and a 28-year-old also from Brandon.
