UPDATED: 5.7 magnitude earthquake strikes off Vancouver Island

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck just past noon today off the coast of Vancouver Island, about 170 km west of Ucluelet.

The United States Geological Survey reported the quake at 12:05 p.m. and said in a statement that “the magnitude is such that a tsunami is not expected.”

The quake’s location and magnitude were based on preliminary information.

Ucluelet resident Tanja Arsenault, who lives across the street from the beach, said she felt minimal shaking.

“It was really tiny but I felt something,’ Arsenault said. “You felt a little movement.”
