Being a left lane hog may now result in a fine and penalty points

VANCOUVER – New legislation goes into effect today to crack down on left lane hogs.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says the new laws will be in effect on multi-lane highways with speed limits over 80 km/hr.

Drivers will be required to move over to the right lane unless they are passing, moving aside for emergency vehicles, preparing for a left-hand turn or merging. Failure to do so may result in a fine of $167 and three penalty points.

During periods of congestion, the actual travel speed drops to 50 kilometres per hour or less and drivers are encouraged to use left-most lane to keep traffic flowing.

“There are 16 different failure to yield provisions in the Motor Vehicle Act – this is now another one,” said Stone. “There’s a whole wide array of requirements, driver requirements in the Motor Vehicle Act that drivers must stay on top of and be aware of.”

“Obviously, when we introduce new laws like this one, we always make sure they are accompanied with as much education and awareness as possible and so we’ll be focusing on that with our safety stakeholders.”

Stone said enforcement will be part of the new rules, but it will also involve education and awareness.
