HALIFAX – Five people were sent to hospital after a car flipped over in the Halifax area on Thursday night.

Halifax Regional Police say an officer on duty approached a vehicle parked near the Herring Cove Look-Off at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday night. As the officer approached the vehicle it sped off, and left the road a short distance away, near the intersection of John Brackett Drive and Dempsey Lane.

The car flipped on its roof causing serious damage.

Four of the passengers in the car had to be extracted by Halifax Fire and Emergency.

All five occupants were transported to hospital. Three were released after treatment. Two of the passengers who were seated in the back seat, a 14-year-old female youth and a 21-year-old man remain in hospital. They sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Because passengers in the car sustained serious injuries, Halifax Regional Police have referred the incident to the Serious Incident Response Team for further investigation.

The vehicle involved in the crash was determined to have been stolen from Antigonish on August 8.

 

The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old man is facing charges of impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He was held in custody overnight.

The third bask-seat passenger, an 18-year-old man is also facing charges of misleading police after providing a false name. He had a warrant out for his arrest, and was held in custody overnight.

Both young men are scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial court later today.

The incident is still under investigation, and police say more charges are anticipated.
