MONTREAL — Several parked cars were swept away by flood waters after heavy rain caused a river in southeastern Quebec to overflow its banks on Tuesday evening.
Most of the damage from the flooding along the Coaticook River south of Sherbrooke appeared to be in the community of Coaticook.
The fire chief, André Lafaille, said several cars were swept away by the flood and were the trapped under a bridge, which obstructed the flow of water and worsened the situation.
Lafaille said at least 30 houses were evacuated in the town and one person had to be rescued by firefighters after his vehicle ended up in the middle of the river. There were no reported injuries.

The heavy rain caused a similar situation in Compton, about 12 kilometres north of Coaticook.
Mayor Bernard Vanasse said Tuesday evening that all roads leading to his municipality were flooded and inaccessible.
He said some residents have taken shelter at an emergency centre in the town hall.
