Whistler Cycling Club holds memorial ride for cyclists who died in Hwy 99 crash

Cyclists gathered at the base of Blackcomb Mountain Tuesday for a memorial ride to celebrate the lives of Kelly Blunden and Ross Chafe.

The two cyclists died May 31 after being struck by a car north of Pemberton. A passenger in the vehicle, Paul Maurice Pierre Jr., also died. The driver, who has a lengthy criminal record, faces possible charges. Police say they are still investigating.

“We really felt this was a fitting memorial and tribute to them,” said Frank Savage of the Whistler Cycling Club. “Both of them would have participated in the club ride as they have in the past. This just seemed like a way of honouring them in a fitting matter.”

As cyclists set out for their memorial ride, many noted how the two had actively promoted cycling safety. Friends say they’ll continue to do that in their memory. Both will also be recognized at a celebration of life at the Whistler Conference Centre on June 13.
