Criminal charges pending in fatal gas station hit-and-run

CALGARY – Police say charges are pending against a 20-year-old Calgary man who allegedly ran over Centex gas station attendant Maryam Rashidi on Sunday morning. The 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital and died of her injuries on Tuesday.

Police had been searching for suspects after a stolen 2006 Ford Super Duty pick-up truck was involved in a gas-and-dash in the 1700 block of 16 Avenue N.W. at around 11 a.m. on Sunday. Tips from the public led police to the abandoned truck on Monday evening in the 3800 block of Vancouver Crescent N.W.

Additional information led police to a home in the northwest community of Beddington Heights around 6 p.m. on Tuesday. After a long standoff, police arrested two suspects believed to be the driver and passenger of the Ford truck.

No charges were laid against the 16-year-old male passenger in the vehicle.

Police say after appearing before a Justice of the Peace, the 20-year-old driver is expected to be charged with:

  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Hit and run causing death
  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Possession of stolen property over $5000
  • Theft

Further charges may be laid; police are not releasing the man’s name until his court appearance.

A trust fund has been set up in the names of Rashidi’s husband, Ahmad, and son, Koorosh at TD Canada Trust transit or branch 01729 account number 6737034.

Fellow gas attendants honoured Rashidi by setting up a memorial on Wednesday at the Centex on 16 Ave. where she worked:
