WINNIPEG — It’s a project designed to improve traffic around Transcona but the area’s councillor says the Plessis Road underpass project has gotten out of hand.
“This is an embarrassment to the city, what has happened with this project,” Russ Wyatt said during a city finance meeting Thursday morning.
Earlier this week, Wyatt called for the suspension of public works director Brad Sacher and an investigation into why the project is so far behind schedule and over budget.

City staff now say two lanes of Plessis won’t be open until at least the end of October 2015. The city had once hoped to have the entire project completed by September 2015.
“What do I tell my constituents?” said Wyatt, who also asked the committee to do more than accept a recent financial report as information.
He wants the finance committee to dig into the delays because taxpayers are on the hook for the costs.

The project is also now $8.4 million over the initial $77-million budget. The city hopes to recover the costs from the rail line.
