TORONTO – Apple has issued a voluntary recall of its Beats Pill XL speakers after discovering the speaker’s battery can overheat and catch fire.
“Apple has determined that, in rare cases, the battery in the Beats Pill XL may overheat and pose a fire safety risk,” read a press release issued Wednesday. “Because customer safety is the company’s top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using their Beats Pill XL speakers.”
The recall applies only to the Beats Pill XL model, which comes in black, white, pink, metallic sky and titanium colours.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said about 11,000 of the speakers were sold in Canada.
Customers affected by the recall will receive a refund of $395 after filling out a return request through Apple’s website.
However, the company noted returns will only be processed online for the recall – that means you won’t be able to walk into your local Apple Store and hand over your speaker for a refund.
Beats, which also makes headphones, was bought last year by Apple Inc. for $3 billion.
