28-year-old drowns at Banff’s Johnston Canyon

CALGARY – A 28-year-old man from Edmonton drowned at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park on Sunday afternoon, according to RCMP.

A Parks Canada Search and Rescue team was called at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Sunday; RCMP were notified a few minutes later that a man was in the water, unconscious. STARS also responded, and the body was recovered from Johnston Creek at around 6 p.m.

The man’s body was taken to the Calgary medical examiner’s office for an autopsy; medical officials continue to investigate.

RCMP said there was no information as of yet to suggest the death was alcohol-related.

“People need to be mindful this time of year around water, specifically with the snow melt that is still happening in the mountains,” said Banff RCMP Cpl. Sharon Franks. “It’s increasing the amounts of water and the water is very cold.”

Franks said to be aware of dangerous conditions and to follow any signs of hazards in the area.

RCMP are not releasing the name of the man.
