WINNIPEG — People flying through Winnipeg Richardson International Airport Saturday faced delays after a security breach.

Just after 2 pm passengers who had already cleared security were told to leave the holding area.

“There are police everywhere and they are searching through the garbages now,” Niigaan Sinclair, who is at the airport.

An airport spokesperson told Global News there was a security breach in the departures hall. That is the area where passengers wait to board their flights.

“It’s unfortunate for all the passengers,” said Breanne Talbot, with the Winnipeg Airports Authority. “It is an inconvenience.”

She estimates around 400 people will have to be re-screened and that process could take around an hour.

“I think everyone is quite nervous for connecting flights,” Sinclair said “For me I am flying to Ottawa and we for sure are going to miss that flight now.”

Talbot said security did a full sweep of the departures area to ensure it was safe.

At least seven flights were delayed. For the latest departure information click here.
