BC Hydro and provincial unions reach labour deal to build Site C dam

WATCH: The billion dollar Site C dam project has cleared another hurdle. Keith Baldrey explains.

BC Hydro and the BC Building Trades have reached an agreement on the construction of the Site C Clean Energy Project.

The deal allows both union and non-union workers to work on the $9-billion hydroelectric dam along with independent and First Nations contractors.

“It allows for a managed open site and also takes important steps to ensure the BC Building Trades unions will take part in the construction along with all other B.C. workers,” said BC Hydro president Jessica McDonald.

BC Hydro will be placing a greater weight on bids with a mix of labour workers, which includes the province’s union. In turn, the unions have waived the practice of signing project labour agreements that restrict other non-affiliated groups from working on the site.

“The agreement represents a compromise and reflects the desire of our members to work on the project at union wages and benefits while also respecting the mixed site model of the employer,” said Tom Sigurdson, executive director of the BC Building Trades.
