ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief veterinary officer says a red fox recently killed in western Labrador has tested positive for rabies.
Samples from the animal killed in Wabush were sent this week to the Canadian Food Inspection laboratories in Ottawa where it tested positive for rabies.

It’s the first case of rabies reported in Labrador since 2005.
Dr. Hugh Whitney says rabies has also been reported in northern Quebec and with growing fox populations across Labrador, there could be more cases.
