REGINA – Bone-chilling cold has set electricity use soaring to a new record in Saskatchewan.
SaskPower says 3,265 megawatts were used Wednesday evening – passing the previous record of 3,231 megawatts set on Dec. 14, 2009.

Spokesman Shawn Silzer says people have more lights on at this time of year, they’re plugging in cars and some are using electric heat to keep warm.
The overnight temperature in many parts of Saskatchewan has been near -40 Celsius with the wind chill this week.
Silzer also says there are more people in the province now than there were in 2009 and they’re using more devices that need electricity.
SaskEnergy also set a new record for natural gas use as people cranked up the thermostat.
