Moncton cyclists call for more and improved bike lanes

MONCTON – Cyclists taking part in a Heritage Ride across the city say Moncton’s future should include more bike lanes.

Mallory Clarke guided dozens of cyclists along the tour. The 12.5 km ride included stops at historic sites around the city.

But she said using Moncton’s bike lanes can be difficult.

“Where the bike lanes are right up against the curb, they’re quite often times when there’s a right turning lane that you have to cut across to get to where you’re going and the bike lane evaporates into the road,” she said. “So I think making connections is very important.”

Clarke is also the executive director of La Bikery. The not-for-profit group encourages people to use their bikes to get around the city but she said there needs to be better bike lanes to get more people out.

“There are plenty of places where they’ve just painted a white line and that’s it. So there are still potholes and gutters and very big personal obstacles in the bike lanes,” she said.

Cyclists taking part in the Heritage Ride also said there should be more bike lanes around Moncton.

Giselle Aubut recently moved to Moncton from Montreal and said there are lots of bike lanes and trails around that city.

Aubut thinks Moncton could benefit from a system like that.

“In town bike lanes and reserved bike lanes things like that,” she said.

Fellow cyclist, Dan Stote, said there needs to more trails and lanes designated just for cyclists.

“The best way is to have separate lanes designated for bikes and maybe walking,” he said.

The city said it is working to improve its active transportation plan for cyclists and pedestrians.

Joanne Lamarche is a community development officer with Moncton and said more bike lanes and trails are part of the long term transportation plan for Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.

“Part of that launch of the new Destination 2040 will include increasing the bike lanes, increasing the shared streets and just making all three municipalities more cycle-friendly,” she said.
