Staff help ‘Daisy’ and her ducklings out of Edmonton mall

WATCH ABOVE: The Mill Woods Town Centre had some pretty cute visitors on Friday. Staff helped guide the ducklings outside.

EDMONTON — Flowers, sunshine and green are common signs spring is here. But, at one Edmonton mall, another sure sign is a duck sighting.

For the last few years, a mother duck – who mall staff have dubbed Daisy – wanders into Mill Woods Town Centre with her new ducklings in tow.

“Our security guards are very familiar with her,” says a mall employee.

Since the centre has automatic doors, Daisy and her brood gain easy access to the shops.

“She just scoots in and of course her little babies follow her right in.”

This year, staff have noticed 10 ducklings. Last spring, Daisy brought in 11.

Since the mall isn’t the place for a young duck family, staff try to herd them outside.

“I picked up mama duck and put her outside,” says the mall employee. But, about an hour-and-a-half later, around 10 a.m. Friday, Daisy was back.

This time, a security guard made sure the crew was OK, then gently picked up mom again and led everyone outside.

The staff member says Daisy’s nest is in some foliage outside a restaurant connected to the mall and there’s a man-made lake just east of the building.

She adds customers have been very good at either leaving the ducks alone or helping herd them to the nearest exit.
