Via reopens tracks after fatal accident along Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal corridor

MONTREAL – VIA Trains along the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal corridor are running again after a passenger train travelling from Montreal to Toronto struck a person in Ontario.

At about 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, VIA Train 57 struck and killed a pedestrian about a kilometre west of Belleville, Ontario.

It is unclear what caused the collision and the victim’s name has not been released.

Train traffic between Ottawa and Toronto was temporarily blocked while police conducted investigations on the track.

Passengers from two trains affected by the accident disembarked at Kingston and took the bus to Toronto.

After police investigations were completed, the tracks reopened just after 3:30 p.m.
