Tips on how to increase your WiFi range and strength

VANCOUVER – Mike Agerbo from Get Connected joined Sophie Lui and Jay Durant on Monday morning to give some tips on how to make sure you get the most out of your WiFi connection.

1. Make sure you have the latest technology – you can always call your Internet Service Provider and ask them if you have the latest modem and router. If it has been several years since you received your modem and router, it might be time to upgrade them. This will dramatically increase your overall quality of WiFi in your home.

2. Make sure your firmware is up to date as well. Go to the website for your router (Nexus, D-Link, etc) and check to see if they have released any updates as that can help improve your signal.

3. Get a dual band router. This is a router that has a 2.4 GHz band and a 5 GHz band. The tri-band routers have two bands at 5 GHz.

4. Check your channels. Using programs such as WiFi Stumbler, you can load it on to your laptop and check what channels your neighbours are using. You want to make sure you are not on the same channels as your neighbours as that can interfere with your router. Try and use a channel at least two channels away from your neighbours. Routers with a 5 GHz band allow access to more channels. You can also allocate priority to certain tasks, such as streaming video or online gaming.

5. Reboot your router every couple of days. Unplug it for about 10 seconds and then plug it back in and this can help your WiFi strength.

6. You can also use a range extender. You can plug it into an outlet away from your router and it will extend the range of your WiFi network.
