Two accidents involving skydivers in Kamloops

WATCH:  Two terrifying crashes at an annual skydiving event in Kamloops over the weekend. Both accidents involved experienced skydivers – one of whom is now in hospital after surviving a 50-foot freefall. Ted Chernecki explains what happened.

The May long weekend saw two crash landings involving skydivers in Kamloops, CFJC reports.

Dean Schryver of the Kamloops Skydive Club says both accidents involved experienced skydivers, who made poor decisions upon landing.

A female skydiver was transported to Royal Inland Hospital after a 15-metre free fall around 1:15 p.m. Saturday. She is in serious, but stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

“She ended up trying to make a turn that was too low to the ground, which didn’t put her in the proper position to land,” said Schryver. “She had a hard landing, meaning that her feet weren’t underneath her when she landed. ”

On Friday evening, local residents Traci McDermid and Darren Crawford heard what sounded like a loud bang in her backyard. McDermid looked outside and saw a skydiver who had just crash landed through her fence and collided into her house. The skydiver reportedly walked away from the accident.

“He was setting himself up for a landing and he chose an alternate landing area of ours,” said Schryver of Friday’s incident. “With the wind, it ended up pushing him farther than he anticipated. He ended up crashing into the side of the fence which carried through into the side of the building.

“It’s a humbling experience realizing the mistake that you made and the potential danger you put yourself in.”
