Global Lethbridge staff share long weekend plans

Camping is a popular long weekend pastime, but not for Global Lethbridge staff. File / Global News

LETHBRIDGE – Victoria Day is a Canadian statutory holiday honouring Queen Victoria’s birthday.

She died in 1901 and that’s when Parliament made her birthday an annual holiday.

In 2015, it’s often referred to as “May long” or the start of the camping season.

Despite that nickname, not one of our Global Lethbridge staff is pitching a tent or cooking over a campfire.

Early and Evening News anchor Liam Nixon is staying in Lethbridge, but won’t exactly have his feet up at home.

“We’re hosting out of town family from B.C., Calgary and Medicine Hat,” he said. “I’d like to think they’re coming to see me, but really, it’s all about the twins.

Paul Kingsmith might be at the helm of the 11 o’clock news, but when it comes to his household, two-year-old Bentley rules the roost.

“He has been talking non-stop about the mountains, so we’re taking a day trip to Waterton or the Crowsnest Pass,” said Kingsmith.

Practicum student Erik Mikkelsen is braving busy highways and heading to Calgary.

“I’m going to a few theatre performances this weekend and hanging out with family there,” said Mikkelsen.

Quinn Campbell is spending her long weekend in Iceland.

She’s there on vacation, but is showing her southern Alberta spirit, taking a horseback ride through lava formations.

Blake Lough will be spending his time at the station, working throughout the weekend.

The videographer is planning to catch up with campers who are out braving wet weather.

“I’m also hoping to learn more about a new non-contact bantam hockey league that will start up next season,” said Lough.

Watch for those stories next week and also wish him a happy birthday on Saturday!

Now that you know what some of our staff are doing, Global Lethbridge wants to hear from you! What are your plans for the long weekend? Take our poll below and let us know.
