Southern Albertans step up to help earthquake victims in Nepal

LETHBRIDGE – Dozens of people are dead after another earthquake in Nepal.

The country is still struggling to recover after a devastating quake killed more then 8,000 people less than three weeks ago.

It’s far from southern Alberta, but Lethbridge residents are stepping up to help.

The Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination is partnering with the Bhutanese Cultural Association, Southern Alberta Ethnic Association and Lethbridge Family Services to host a community fundraiser on Friday.

“For everybody in Lethbridge and surrounding area, if this was your family, if this was hitting home personally to you, I think organizations would be stepping up and helping out,” said John Pogorzelski of the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association.

The event is called the Relief fundraiser for victims of the Earthquake in Nepal and takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bill Kergen Centre on 13 Street North.

There will be traditional Bhutanese cuisine, as well as entertainment.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at any Lethbridge Family Services location.

Donations can be made at the Bill Kergan Center with the Canadian government matching what’s raised.
