Jorgen Hus coming home to Saskatchewan Roughriders

Watch above: Saskatchewan Roughriders trade for former Saskatoon Hilltop and Regina Ram Jorgen Hus. Kim Thue reports.

SASKATOON – In January, the Saskatchewan Roughriders acquired Canadian receiver Cory Watson from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Just over three months later, Watson is an Edmonton Eskimo.

The Riders sent Watson and a 2016 second round draft pick to Edmonton in exchange for long snapper extraordinaire Jorgen Hus, along with a third rounder next year.

For Hus, the former Saskatoon Hilltop and Regina Ram, it’s a homecoming as he joins the team he grew up cheering for.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I think it’s every kid’s dream growing up here to play for the Riders,” claims the 25-year-old. “To get that opportunity is really exciting and I’m looking forward to it”.

Hus wearing Green and White isn’t an accident. The Saskatoon product says the possibility of someday playing for the Riders went into his decision to attend the University of Regina back in 2010.

“That was a large part of the reason I went down there (to Regina) in the first place,” says Hus. “I actually had my first pro workout with the Riders when I was like 18 or 19, still playing for the Hilltops. It’s kind of cool how it’s come full circle.”

Hus, who also played linebacker in college, was originally drafted 31st overall by Edmonton in 2013 and has spent the last couple of years trying to earn a job in the NFL, most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Although the Riders and Hus have to agree on a new contract, all signs point to the six-foot one, 232 pound long snapper hitting the field for day one of Riders training camp May 31 at Griffiths Stadium.

“The bottom line is I want to play. It’s super exciting being a Roughrider and being in your home province. Players always just want to play. Getting some regular season games and some tape would be great.”
