HALIFAX – The future of Shakespeare By The Sea is up for debate at Halifax Regional Council on Tuesday.
Bill Karsten, the councillor for Dartmouth South – Eastern Passage, is recommending council help the theatre troupe rebuild after a fire last summer.
Elizabeth Murphy, the company’s artistic director, she says she’s confident the city will cover the repairs.
So confident in fact she says the company is already making plans to partner with the city and raise funds to rebuild the building as a 128-seat theatre.
“We’re going to make a proposal to regional council that we … work in a partnership with Halifax,” says Murphy.
A new theatre would mean the company would be able to “serve our audiences all throughout the summer, even when it rains.”
If the plan is approved, Murphy says the theatre could be open for the 2016 season.
