Driver charged in fatal hit-and-run crash involving motorcycle

One woman was killed and a man left in serious condition following a fatal hit and run between a car and a motorcycle on the 122 Street overpass at Whitemud Drive in southwest Edmonton. Jessica Kent, Global News

EDMONTON — The 60-year-old driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run collision with a motorcycle on May 11 has been charged.

David Gershon Bookhalter was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident knowing bodily harm was caused. He was also charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident knowing death was caused.

The crash – which happened in southwest Edmonton Monday night – left a woman dead and a man in serious condition. It occurred on the 122 Street overpass at Whitemud Drive, at approximately 8:15 p.m. May 11.

Police believe a silver Infiniti car travelling north on 122 Street turned left and struck the southbound motorcycle in the intersection, before heading west on Whitemud Drive.  Both vehicles had a green light.

“The male and female riders of the motorcycle were thrown from the vehicle,” said Anna Batchelor, spokeswoman for the Edmonton Police Service.

The 26-year-old woman died on scene. The 24-year-old male driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in serious condition.  Both were wearing helmets.

Witness reports helped police find the 60-year old man driving the silver Infiniti.  He was taken into custody later in the evening in west Edmonton.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate the collision.
